Replacement of Speakers in the Geo Storm |
| Article: |
These instructions are for those of you who have tried to replace those stock Storm speakers only to find out that your NEW speakers don't mount on the same holes. This mod allows you to create a baffle to mount to the door, and then mount your speaker on. The process takes about 3-4 hours and creates a very professional and sound effective mount for your speakers. This mod was submitted by Jason Yuhas.
Please feel free to print this page for reference.
Upon buying new door speakers for my Storm, I noted that they would not mount/fit in the existing holes. For this I devised a replicatable baffle design for all to use. First, you must run out a purchase some 1/8th in. plexiglass from your local hardware store. This plexiglass will act as your speaker mount. Using a compass, trace a 7" diameter circle onto the plexiglass. Then, using a jigsaw or other efficient cutting tool, cut this shape out of the plexiglass (Do this twice). Once this shape is out, measure 1/4 of an inch from the center and cut out another circle that matches the back (where the speaker begins to form back) of your new speaker. Cut this circle out making sure to be careful not to stress the plexiglass. Once you have this form made, place the plexiglass disc in behind your door panel and mark the spots where the four pre-existing screws will mount the disc to the door (MAKE SURE THE LOWEST PART OF THE INTERIOR CIRCLE IS TOWARD THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR). Drill these holes carefully with a bit that is one size down from the size of the existing screws. I found flathead metal screws work well due to the flat head not obstructing the speaker upon mounting. I painted the heads black with spray paint and mounted the disc in for fit. I then layed the speaker in and marked the holes I needed to drill to mount the speaker (I used the bottom screw to attach the disc AND mount the speaker). The final disc product looked like this:
After completion of the disc, the speaker 'should' lay nicely in the new baffle. If it does not and still hits the plexiglass, you should file it down until it fits correctly. Make sure you fasten the four pre-esxisting speaker screws thru the plexiglass into the fiberglass backing. The disc should look like this when mounted in the door:
Then attach the speaker using the screws given to you with the speaker (unless you share the botom screw like I did). The speaker should mount to the plexiglass nicely and look like this:
Make sure that before you install the speaker you attach the speaker wire. You wll probably need to cut the wire and attach the wire given with the speaker. Remember, in the Storm, the + wire is orange. Make sure you attach this wire to the + terminal. Also, when you place the speaker in the disc, make sure you tuck the wires securely into the hole. Padding can also be made to tilt the speaker up slightly. However, there is little room to manuever behind the speaker panel. This is what the final install looks like:
