Apex-i SAFC Wiring Instructions |
| Article: |
Installing the Apex 'i SAFC Into your Storm
Disclaimer:
Before attempting to install the SAFC, make sure you KNOW what you are doing, you should have a basic understanding of electronics and wiring, if you don't feel like you can do it, DON'T...Take it to a local performance shop along with a FACTORY Helms manual, and they should be able to help you out for the price of 2-3 hours work. I cannot be held responsible for damage caused by an improperly installed unit. This FAQ was written after an install on a 93 base model, but it appears all wires are the same on all model and years...
Tools:
You will need a Phillips head screw driver
Wire cutter/wire stripper
Soldering Iron
Electrical tape
1. Find a spot to locate the unit. (Mine is on the left side of the glove box)
2. Disconnect the negative cable on the battery
3. Remove the part of the dash under the steering wheel to gain easier access to the ECU
4.Unplug the ECU, and set somewhere it will be SAFE
Look at the wiring harness coming from the SAFC
RED= Power (connect to any line that is live only when the ignition is on, if it is not installed a "remote" wire, every time the ignition is shut of the SAFC will lose it's settings)
Green Wire = Engine RPM
Gray Wire = Throttle Signal wire
Black wire =Ground
Brown Wire = Ground
The unit comes with male to female fitting to snap the wires into place, they work well on some wires, while on others, I recommend they be soldered on
If you have a Haynes manual it will come in handy in this part
5. On the instrument wiring harness, locate the RPM wire (It comes off the ignition coil and is a black with red wire)
6. Connect the GREEN wire from the SAFC to the BLACK/red wire for the Tach. (I don't remember the position of this wire on the ECU, but it's easy to find, it's bigger gauge of wire than the others are)
7. Locate the Throttle Position Sensor wire, it is a Yellow/blue wire, located on c13 of the ecu. Connect the GRAY wire from the SAFC to the YELLOW/blue wire (c13)
8. Locate an engine ground wire such as position d3 (a BLACK/blue wire)
Both the Black and Brown wires from the SAFC need to be on this one ground wire.
9. MAKE SURE you place the BROWN wire closer to the ECU than the Black wire...Secure your connections on these.
The next step is a little tricky
10. Locate the MAP sensor wire. It is located on section c11 of the ecu. It is a GRAY/red wire.
The SAFC came with a wire splitter that hooks onto the main wire of this setup, the MAP sensors wire...You need to cut the wire in a spot that you will be able to clamp and solder some connections on.
11. After the wire from the ECU has been cut, connect the supplied wire splitter, the male fitting comes from the ECU wire, the other fittings to the SAFC harness
12. Connect the WHITE wire from the SAFC to the Female fitting on the wire splitter, going back into the ECU (MAP wire)
13. Connect the YELLOW wire from the SAFC to the male fitting on the splitter
14. Secure all connections with electrical tape so wires don't touch...if they do, you may fry the ECU.
15. Reconnect the Negative terminal on the battery
Checkpoints before starting the engine
* Has the SAFC harness been properly connected
* Is there any excess strain on the harness?
*Is the SAFC mounted securely
* Has the Negative terminal been properly connected
WITH the Ignition key on...
* Does the SAFC display properly
*Make sure no sounds or burning smells are coming from the unit
* Did you initialize the unit properly?
The rest, your manual that came with the unit can tell you how to begin work with your new modÂ… |
